Where can Phlebotomist work?
Phlebotomist can work in a variety of settings, most commonly at blood banks and hospitals. In addition to these areas, they can work in physician offices if they have other medical training (CNA, MA, LPN, RN). Phlebotomist can also work for insurance companies to draw blood for people trying to get insurance coverage. Home Health Agencies use phlebotomist by sending them to patients homes or health facilities (like nursing homes, crisis centers or ALF's) so they can draw the patients blood for needed tests. Phlebotomist may be required to work anywhere from 1hr-12hrs on their feet and must be able to push, pull or lift a cart weighing 25 pounds if needed. Some facilities may require you to be a CNA prior to hire.
What is required to be a Phlebotomist?
In the State of Florida there is no regulating body or rules that state you need any formal training or registration with any state agency to be a phlebotomist. In other words, you do not need to have any training, nor is there any STATE testing. People for many years have obtained phlebotomy training simply while working on the job. The likelihood of you obtaining employment without training is limited, as most employers want you to have the training prior to being hired.
What about testing?
There is no state regulated testing like there is for CNA's and Nurses. There is a NATIONAL test through NHA which states that the minimum requirements to sit for their exam is 80 hours of training in various topics relating to phlebotomy, with 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary collections. Only our three- four week 80 hour course will allow you to sit for the national exam. You can however, take the 32 hour course and then transfer into the 80 hour course for an additional fee. Testing is conducted on-site at our offices. The cost of the national certification is $105.
What about jobs?
Most large facilities like the hospital will require that you get a minimum of 100 venipunctures prior to your hire. If your potential job request this, it is not a problem just let us know and we will help you obtain the number of venipunctures required. *there is a cost associated with this. Smaller companies MAY only require the minimum number of venipunctures to be hired while others only require certification. Please note that not all companies require certification. Prior to taking the course you should find a job that you would like and then ask what it would take to be hired there as a phlebotomist. This will help us to design a course to meet your needs.
Please note that as an adult student it is your responsibility to learn more information on what is required to be a phlebotomist including physical, emotional and mental health needs to work in this occupation. Refunds are per refund policy.
